Veggie Galaxy – Cambridge’s Newest Vegetarian Diner

Veggie Galaxy

Adam, a former burger master, first thought of Veggie Galaxy after eating at his local ‘Veggie Planet’. He was captivated by the Cheesy Fries, which came smothered with melted cheddar. Later, he decided to open his own burger joint. This is the result. Adam partnered with Brian, a former head chef at Veggie Planet. Together, they developed a menu that is not only delicious but also wholesome.

Adam started thinking about Veggie Galaxy

Veggie Galaxy, a Cambridge, MA restaurant, opened in 2011. Its founder Adam Penn is a vegetarian who owned the infamous ‘Veggie Planet’ in Harvard Square for ten years. The Harvard Square location closed in 2014, but Adam focused on Veggie Galaxy, which has rapidly become one of the city’s top vegetarian and vegan restaurants. Adam spoke to us about the restaurant’s evolution and why he decided to open a vegan/vegetarian restaurant.

Adam started thinking about Veggie Galaxy while eating at the ‘Galaxy’ last year. While eating there, he was tempted by the place’s signature Cheesy Fries, a plate of fries covered in melted cheddar and a few other ingredients. The massive portion of salt and starch was worth $4.75 and was a treat, but not a meal in itself.

Brian, Veggie Galaxy’s Head Chef, worked at Veggie Planet

Adam founded a vegetarian restaurant, vegggie galaxy, four or five years ago after he noticed the lack of meat-free options at restaurants he visited. He’d also noticed the lack of options for vegans and vegetarians on most diner menus. The two soon realized that a diner is not complete without bacon, so they set out to create a space that would be both a vegetarian and vegan haven.

Brian had a long relationship with Adam, and started working at the restaurant years ago, joking that he started cutting onions for Adam. Later, he took formal culinary training from Johnson and Whales, and spent time in England and Hawaii. He emphasized that everything in the restaurant is made from scratch, and that all ingredients are vegan. It was this connection that made him so popular.

Veggie Galaxy’s Cheesy Fries were smothered in melted cheddar

Veggie Galaxy’s Cheese Fries are deep-fried veggie fries that are smothered in melted cheddar and sprinkled with cayenne pepper. It has a slightly spicy kick and can be served with your favorite side dish. For a healthier version, top your fries with ground meat, diced red onions, jalapenos, tomatoes, sour cream, and/or salsa. You can also substitute ground turkey, chicken, or even a combination of different types of meat.

Cheese Fries are a delicious option for those looking for a guilty treat. I opted for a $4.75 Cheesy Fries that were covered in melted cheddar. It was an enormous plate of starch and saltiness that hit all the right spots. I highly recommend trying them. You’ll be glad you did! This burger and fries are sure to make you want to reorder your favorite fries.
